We will have a recorder belt awarded for carefully practicing and playing “O Come, All Ye Faithful” on recorder in preparation for our winter program. Those achieving their belt will have the opportunity to perform on our program with select members of the Arlington Middle School band and orchestra!
To achieve your belt, submit a video of you playing each line of “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Mr. Amagliani will score your video. You must get at least 16 out of 20 points on each line of the song to achieve your belt and play on the program. (There are 5 lines in the song.) For a more detailed explanation of scoring, see “Tips on Achieving your Winter Program Belt” below.
To reward you for your initiative to make and submit a video outside of class, you will receive an extra 10 points for each and every submission you make of any part of “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” and you may submit each line as many times as you want. (That’s a lot of potential for racking up points!) But remember, you must eventually score at least 16 points on each of the 5 lines of the song to get your belt and play on the program.
! Additional Incentives !
The first student in each homeroom to submit a recorder video for any part of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” gets an extra 20 points.
Anyone who submits the whole “O Come All Ye Faithful” song in a single video and gets a perfect score (100 points) will be mentioned by name at the music program, and you will receive 10 tickets.
The student with the most recorder points in each homeroom will be named at the program. So, even if you aren’t able to earn your winter program belt, you could score lots of points for yourself and your class by submitting lots of carefully practiced videos (of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and other Recorder Karate songs) and be recognized at the program.
!!! Tips on Achieving Your Winter Program Belt !!!
The recorder song, “O Come, All Ye Faithful” has five lines. Each line is worth 20 points.
Each line is judged on: (This is an updated point distribution. There is still a 16 point minimum to pass each line.)
- Blowing slow: 5 points.
- Doing the do: 5 points.
- Rhythm (Sounds like practice step 1): 5 points
- Correct Notes/Fingers and Overall effect: 5 points.
To “pass off” each line:
You must score a minimum of 16 points, AND
You may not score a zero in any category.
Score 18 or 19 out of 20: Awarded 1 ticket.
Score 20 out of 20: Awarded 2 tickets.
How I score:
Blowing Slow
I’m listening to the quality of the sound. Does it sound gentle and pretty, and is it at the right pitch level. I will let you know if you need to blow a little slower or faster to achieve the right pitch level. (If you or a sibling has a tuner, that can help you as well.)
Doing the Do
I’m listening for consistently “doing the do” (starting each note with the tongue) on every note, but doing the do gently enough so that the note does not squeak for crack.
Rhythm (Sounds Like Practice Step 1)
I’m listening for correct rhythms and a steady beat. Generally, 2 points are deducted for each rhythm mistake.
If I give you a picture of the music with feedback, an “R” or a red bubble means a rhythm or steady beat mistake was made at that point in the music.
- Here are some reasons for lowered scores: Pausing between notes, putting gaps between notes, not holding sound out for full rhythmic value, speeding up, slowing down.
- Tip: When doing practice step one, go slow and hold out your ta’s and ta-a’s just as if you were making a recorder sound. And above all, keep a steady (don’t slow down, speed up, or pause).
- if you want to be absolutely sure you are practicing the right rhythm, submit a video of you saying and tapping practice step 1. I will give you feedback.
Correct Notes/Fingerings and Overall Effect
I’m listening for the right fingerings and the right sound. (For example: If the written note is a “B” then you finger a B and a B is what sounds.) One or two points are deducted for each note mistake.
If I give you a picture of the music with feedback, an “N” or a blue bubble means a note or fingering mistake was made at that point in the music.
- Here are some reasons for lowered scores: Wrong fingering, bobbled fingering, squeaks and cracks. See the back of your practice sheet for common causes of wrong fingerings.
- To avoid squeaks and cracks: blow slow, feel and scoot carefully, hover to cover, and do a ring test on a 6-finger low D before you practice.
- I’m also listening for the overall effect: In my judgement, is the “total package” pretty and presentable.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
This scoring may seem strict, but keep in mind that we will play this in public with the best members of the Arlington Middle School band and orchestra, so the song needs to be carefully practiced, well-prepared, and performed with excellence. The bar is high but very achievable if you do each practice step carefully and repeatedly until you are good at it before submitting a video and if you keep in mind what I’m listening for as described above. And remember: You can submit any line as many times as you want, so practice carefully but don’t wait for it to be perfect to submit a video. Go ahead and submit, and I will give you feedback for improving the line you are working on. Then you can use what you learn to practice the other lines.
Happy Practicing! -Mr. A
